Writing Assignment 1: Summary and Argument
Goals:
1. To summarize the main ideas of a text by Joseph Campbell.
2. To apply Campbell’s ideas to a literary text.
3. To make an argument about the extent to which this literary text follows Campbell’s idea
of the hero’s adventure.
4. To analyze quotes from one part of a literary text closely.
Topic:
In class we have been discussing different ideas of heroism in the epic tradition. One influential
view of heroism is presented by Joseph Campbell’s “The Hero’s Adventure”, a short interview
with Bill Moyers (on Canvas).
In this assignment, you have to summarize Campbell’s ideas in “The Hero’s Adventure” and
make an argument in response to the following question: to what extent does The Epic of
Gilgamesh OR The Odyssey follow Campbell’s idea of the hero’s adventure?
To answer this question, choose either The Epic of Gilgamesh or The Odyssey. If you choose
Gilgamesh, your assignment should focus largely on one tablet from the text. If you choose The
Odyssey, your assignment should focus largely on one book from the text.
The choice, order, and exact topic of the body paragraphs are up to you.
When completing this assignment, think of yourself as writing for someone already familiar with
this class and the course texts. You could consider your audience as a classmate who has
attended our classes and been exposed to the same class materials you have. The purpose of this
assignment is to independently investigate new possibilities in Gilgamesh or The Odyssey based
on Campbell; think of your assignment as ‘bringing the news’ about a tablet or book we have not
looked at carefully together in class.
Submission:
This assignment is due on February 18, before the starting time of our usual class. To
complete this task, your assignment should be between 750 and 800 words. Quotations are not
included in the word count.
To submit, email your assignment to the instructor and submit an electronic copy to the
“Assignments” module on the left hand side of the Canvas page. Please submit as a PDF. Your
assignment should be double-spaced, Times New Roman font, size 12; include a word count at
the end of your essay; use MLA format for in-text citations and for the list of Works Cited. Put
page number and your last name in the top right hand corner (e.g. Azzopardi 1). Review the
syllabus for the late submissions policy.
Preparing your assignment:
● Review class notes, lecture slides, handouts, and your notes and annotations. What do we
know about character, behavior, and heroism in The Epic of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey?
What don’t we know? Which parts of these texts haven’t we looked at carefully together
in class? Do you have any questions about heroism that haven’t been answered in class?
● Choose either Gilgamesh or The Odyssey, and decide which tablet or book your
assignment will focus on.
● Reread your chosen tablet or book. What is happening in this part of the text? Who are
the main characters? What action is taking place? At what point in the story are we? How
can Campbell be applied to this part of the text? Which parts of this tablet or book are
similar to Campbell? Which parts are different? Which quotations from Campbell or the
tablet or book you’re using best demonstrate your argument?
● Avoid retelling the story of Gilgamesh or The Odyssey; someone familiar with this class
knows it already.
● Remember that your assignment doesn’t have to focus only on the main character in the
story.
Criteria for successful completion of assignment:
1. Review the writing assignment rubric attached to the syllabus, as your assignment will
be graded according to this rubric.
2. Review the ‘Guide to Writing Assignments’ Canvas folder. This folder contains
information on how to plan, outline, organize, and edit your paper, and contains sample
essays.
3. Only use the versions of Gilgamesh and The Odyssey listed on the syllabus.
4. This is not a research task, though if you do make use of additional sources be sure to
include an in-text citation and entry in the Works Cited page.
5. Complete an outline before you start writing, and write more than one draft before the
due date. You are welcome to communicate with the instructor about your draft.
6. Your essay should contain an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion.
7. The introduction should have a thesis statement clearly indicating your answer to the
essay question.
8. Each body paragraph should begin with a specific and argumentative topic sentence.
Topic sentences should be your own conclusion about the topic, not an announcement of
the topic.
9. A combination of paraphrases and quotes (in each body paragraph: minimum 1 quote).
Quotes should be analyzed closely and carefully using the class materials on ‘close
reading.’
10. The essay will reflect strong analytical skills and sophisticated understanding of both
texts and the questions about heroism they raise.
11. The essay should be free of grammar mistakes and convey ideas in clear and correct
Standard English.
12. MLA format should be used for in-text citation of quotes, paraphrases, and for the
Works Cited page.
13. The conclusion should summarize the main points of the essay.
14. Students are encouraged to meet their instructor during office hours for further writing
support. The Teaching and Learning Center can also help students plan, edit, and revise
writing assignments.
Refer to the course syllabus for guidelines for academic dishonesty and plagiarism.
