Rhetorical Analysis: CDC Summarization of ADHD
ADHD is an acronym for Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and it is most frequent
among adolescents. It has an effect on people’s actions, causing them to appear impatient, have
a hard time focusing, and operate on inclination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) is a public health organization dedicated to saving lives and protecting people from
health risks and consequences. To inform the general public about conditions and diseases, they
publish papers on their study and discoveries. On its website, the CDC offers a memorandum
dedicated to bringing awareness on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This page
contains data about ADHD indications and symptoms, classifications, explanations, assessment,
available clinical implications, and hot to improve outcomes. The CDC and other reputable
articles use tactics such as ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade and educate people about ADHD
through written discourse.
Pathos in the CDC
Pathos, logos, and ethos can help advocates and authors persuade their audiences. Pathos
is concerned with emotional reactions and involves the author purposefully invoking emotions in
order to make people react the way the writer intends. Pathos, or emotional appeal, is used by the
CDC by offering data alongside visuals. Their approach of influencing the audience is to
deliberately provoke specific emotions to lead them to feel the emotions that the author desires
them to feel. The authors used exact wording, relevant terminology, and examples to create
emotion in the readers, allowing them to connect with the information and become more
involved in the reading. The article informs parents about therapy choices for primary school
children aged 4-5 years old. They state that behavior therapy is a crucial step before considering
medication to treat ADHD (CDC, n.d.). However, when they talk about children with ADHD,
3
an image is matched alongside the text, whereas there were no factors of pathos while discussing
adults with ADHD using the logos technique.
Logos in Frontiers in Psychiatry
To use logos, the presenter must cite or show credible facts, data, charts, and so on in
order to persuade the target audience that they are accurate. The data from Frontiers in
Psychiatry is organized logically. Since the website is a peer-reviewed piece, users can be
guaranteed that the data is reliable. They give links to other reputable sources that people may
want to look at if they need more information. Their study’s goal was to look into the common
and particular neural modifications in the anatomy and cognition of the human mind with ADHD
by providing tables and the mathematical breakdown of how they carried out their experiment, as
well as the distinctions in brain abnormalities amongst adults and adolescents with ADHD
(Miaomiao, 2023). Both the CDC and Frontiers in Psychiatry use facts and evidence to enlighten
and expand the readers’ understanding rather than using much emotion or a persuasive tone in
their articles. Along with their respected reputation, they can communicate facts to the public and
ensure that everyone will trust what they present, which is practicing the ethos approach.
Ethos in Theory of Mind
On the CDC website, there is no writer indicated in the sense of ethos, but the bottom of
the page allows you to know when the information was last examined, which was done by
government staff because it is on a .gov website. In “Theory of mind in adolescents with
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A cross-sectional research” numerous authors are
credited, and the publishing business is also mentioned so the readers are able to identify if the
writers are reliable. Many of the authors are also recognized as professors, this is another
indicator that these individuals are skilled experts who have researched the field and the
4
materials they are presenting. Research was conducted to determine whether gender, mean age,
birth rank, family structure, and wealth were factors in persons with ADHD, however this
required the supervision of an expert, specifically a psychiatrist (Razjouan, 2023). They would
be qualified to distinguish between those who have ADHD and those who do not. Both the CDC
and this publication have the knowledge and equipment to undertake similar tests in order to
educate others about this subject.
Conclusion
To convince and educate people about ADHD the CDC and other respected sources
employ persuasive writing techniques such as ethos, pathos, and logos. The CDC employed
pathos to purposely trigger various emotions in their approach to persuading the public. Frontiers
in Psychiatry employed logos to support their statements by presenting tables, facts, and
mathematical calculations. Finally, the ethos is adopted in “Theory of mind in adolescents with
Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A cross-sectional study” by acknowledging all authors.
These strategies are utilized across these articles to raise awareness about ADHD, how it affects
people, and how it is inherited.
